My music magazine was aimed at girls aged between 5-11. From the results of my questionnaire I made my magazine to what my audience would want. I mainly used what the majority said they wanted. I.e. the main colour I used was pink because 7 out of 23 people preferred pink. I also included a freebie as my audience research showed that it was one of the main things young girls liked on the magazines.

All the text in the magazine was simple and easy to read because young people don’t like to read a lot. The titles had more fancy text but still easy to read. The image on the front of my magazine was of the girl band used in my double page spread. It had a direct mode of address. None of the images were too serious because young girls like to be able to relate to there idols. So using a fun, happy picture makes them feel good.

I priced my magazine at £2.50. I thought this was a reasonable price and was what the results from my questionnaire said young girls would pay. I think because it is more likely to be their parents paying for the magazine the price aren’t as important.

I think the layout of my magazine was similar to existing magazines. There is a central image with a direct mode of address. The text and fonts are simple which is likely to be used in a real magazine. And the colours are stereotypical young girl’s colours. I think the article on my double page spread was good, but at the same time I think it was a bit to long for my target audience.

I believe supermarkets are the most likely place to distribute my magazine. Because it is likely to be the parents buying the magazine, girls will often ask them for it when they walk past in the store. Also because it isn’t really a specialist magazine, even though it is a music magazine, everyone listen to music.

I think Photoshop was really useful. It is really good for editing things to do with pictures. It does it in a more detailed way than other programmes. But at the same time it is very time consuming. I hadn’t used it before so I learnt a lot about it. I liked how easy it was to delete small things that often ruin a picture. I.e. spots or a background.

I used a digital camera to take my photos. I learnt from my prelimary task I need to make sure the lighting and quality were good, because they are difficult to improve. It was extremely useful, without it I would have had to take loads of photos and get them all printed and then scan them to get the on the computer, all the time they would have been loosing quality.

I had never used a blogging method before. I thought it was good because it makes it easy to get our work in. but it had its downfalls. It took a lot of time to get things uploaded and often there wasn’t enough space.

Magazine Evaluation

I purpose of my magazine was to inform and entertain students. The target audience of the magazine is the pupils at the Howard. My magazine follows the conventions of layout and page design by using a title that takes up about 1/3 of the page; I used a photo taken at a medium-close up. I wrote my text around the image. I used the words ‘special’ and ‘exclusive’ to draw my audience to the magazine. My images on my contents page where along the right hand side to make the page look smart, well laid out and easy to read.

My cover picture is of a sixth form student. I used my main cover image because it is a student that looks like he is enjoying himself. This gives the idea that the magazine is a fun, happy magazine. It has a direct mode of address because he is looking into the camera. I cut out the image using the magnetic lasso tool. I increased the brightness off my image.

On my front cover for my title I used a childish font so it would appeal to my target audience. The rest of my text was in a standard Times New Roman text. This is more formal but doesn’t make the magazine stand out as much. My front cover has a more informal register. This is appropriate when writing for a teenage audience because it gives the impression that the magazine is going to be fun. My contents page is quite formal. All the writing is down the left hand side. It is all in the same font and font size. I used the word exclusive which is a buzz word. I used the sentence ‘Special new term addition.’ This draws people to the magazine.

The General colour scheme of my front cover and contents page is orange and blue. I used the same background on both pages to keep them alike. The colours of the background contrast to each other by changing into colours that go with each other. For an example the blue change to white then to light brown then to orange. This makes the colours complement each other. I used a blue and black title to make the colours complement the background.

I put text next to my main image to indicate that it involved the person in the image. This makes the text easier to read and understand. The text was all the same because I ran out of time.

I think I could have improved my magazine if I had more time. I definitely would have changed my text to make it more interesting. Other than the text I think my magazine was good.
